A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in Malda’s Sadarghat area, where a 17-year-old boy drowned during a Shiva idol immersion ceremony. The victim, identified as Astik Roy, a resident of Gandhi Colony in Ward 13, had gone with his friends to immerse an old idol in the Mahananda River. During the immersion, Astik entered deeper waters and was soon swept away.
When Astik went missing, his friends immediately alerted his family and locals. Despite their efforts to search for him, he could not be found, prompting the family to inform the authorities. A team of police officers from Malda police station, along with a disaster management team, arrived at the scene and began a search operation.
After hours of searching, Astik’s body was recovered from the river and was taken to Malda Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident has highlighted the need for increased safety measures during water-based religious ceremonies.
